On Sunday, October 13th, la BEAST Gallery will host "Into the Bog: A Conversation on Fiction and Grief," an artist panel discussion featuring Amy MacKay, Perry Daniel, Kim Garcia and Miriam Katz.

This event seeks to place Amy MacKay’s paintings, on view at the gallery now, within a broader conceptual framework, delving into themes of loss, change, memory, and the role of narrative across various artistic practices. The four panelists were all involved in the 2023 reenactment of Marina Carr’s play By the Bog of Cats produced by Amy MacKay and Jess Camacho. This outdoor performance inspired MacKay’s series now on display at la BEAST gallery.

The panelists will reflect on their shared experience of art and grief, and explore how fiction informs their diverse mediums, ranging from sculpture to performance to puppetry—while highlighting the significance of memory in their creative processes.

—------------------------------

Amy MacKay (b. 1985 Sonoma, California) is an artist and educator based in Los Angeles. Generating work through a multi-step translation process, she stages group events, and, drawing from written, photographic, and interview documentation, records the experience as paintings. Within this collaborative exchange, she uses translation to explore the gaps and mutations formed across a shared experience over time. Residual feelings and mutations are privileged over the recognizability of the image. It is a process that is highly physical, almost gymnastic, as additive and subtractive mark making trace her working memory. It comes back to process; what is the interaction between past and present? And how do images create absence?

MacKay received an MFA from UC Irvine in 2018 and a BA from Bard College, New York in 2007. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in spaces such as Phase Gallery, Baert Gallery and the Honolulu Museum. She has received numerous awards, notably the Jon Imber Painting Fellowship and Leo Freedman Fellowship.

Kim Garcia is an artist working in sculpture, drawing, and painting. Through her second-generation Filipino American lens, her practice explores social dynamics and residual trauma that stem from interpersonal relationships, community structures, and memory. Kim comes from a background in creating collaborative community projects that often employ alternative spaces as a site to explore studio art practices, site-specific collaboration, and exhibition research. She is the founder of The Cold Read, an online critique group and artist community that engages in gestures of care and support through writing. She is also one of the co-founders of after hours gallery, a project space in Los Angeles that hosts two-person exhibitions. Kim’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibition spaces such as Phase Gallery (Los Angeles), DXIX Projects (Los Angeles), Human Resources (Los Angeles), Durden and Ray (Los Angeles), Torrance Art Museum (Torrance, CA), CICA Museum (Korea), and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Kim is based in Los Angeles and received her BA from UC San Diego and her MFA from UC Irvine.

Miriam Katz is a comedic actor, improviser, teacher, and writer. Her work can be seen all
over the internet and on your TVs, and heard in a lot of niche video games. She trained at The Groundlings, UCB, The Beverly Hills Playhouse, and The Barrow Group. She also studied Comparative Literature at Columbia University and for some reason has a Master’s Degree in Art History. Katz teaches comedic performance (improv, stand up, sketch, and characters) to kids and teens ages 6 to 16. She also coaches grown-up comedians and works with professional adults to help them become more comfortable with public speaking. Katz has written about comedy for Artforum, Bookforum, and currently, for the LA Times. She’s organized comedy shows for MoMA (NY) MoCA (LA), and Silencio (Paris). Her ridiculous and yet award-winning film “How Frank Stella Got Her Groove Back” is currently on the festival circuit and will screen at the New York Comedy Shorts Festival on November 3rd . Her soon-to-be-released podcast, “Ex Appeal,” will feature interviews with every single person she’s ever been romantic with on any level. All of them. As in, over a hundred. It’s wild.
