Press Release
This year's booth is a presentation of three fascinating female painters: Mónica Figueroa, Amy MacKay, and Emily Rose Rudnick. All oil painters, independent in their technique, use story telling as their common instrument.
Figueroa, deeply influenced by the inner workings of female companionship, uses stunning color choice in company with elements of the natural world, to conjure fantastic realms. By smearing and dragging her brush, Figueroa composes an expressive terrain, chalk-full of gestural nuance and hypnotic movement.
MacKay derives her subject matter from the theater; meticulously documenting self-produced plays, capturing key moments. After her preparations, MacKay washes her panels with thin layers of oil paint, emulating the sophistications of watercolor, building visual chronicles.
Rudnick’s work addresses how tangible objects can hold emotional weight as they make their way through multiple generations. Hyper detailed, yet distorted, Rudnick’s paintings are exceedingly emotive. Many of her depictions present strong color along-side bright highlights, creating bewildering kaleidoscopes, rich with iridescence.
Despite the directional differences of these artists, the lurking suggestion of warm abstraction pushing against vivid representational action, is ever-present. Splashy tones grounded by earthen hues. These works tell a story of wistful drama, tender embrace, and the curiosity of imbued memory.
