Xavier Fumat (b. 1963, Villahermosa, Tabasco Mexico) is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus in photography and printmaking, he currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Coming from a storied past, Fumat finds reprieve in the easily accessible desert of Death Valley. Having moved numerous times in his youth due to his father’s work as a pilot, first from Tabasco to Belize and then finally to Los Angeles, Fumat became enamored by car culture at an early age. Balancing technical mastery with his predisposition for chaotic compositions, Fumat’s artwork is a mixture of clippings from vintage magazines and his own photography, which generally depicts desert landscapes and everyday aspects of Los Angeles culture, particularly East Los Angeles where he now resides. Using the DASS method alongside other water transfer techniques, Fumat playfully manipulates his images and transfers them to fine printmaking paper. His artistry can be observed in the brushstrokes, through which he decides what parts of the images fade away or come into focus. Also serving as a therapeutic process, the layers of collaged images represent the push and pull experienced when contending with bygone memories.

Fumat received his BA in Fine Art from California State University Northridge in 1998. That same year, Fumat began work as a printmaking assistant at Gemini G.E.L., where he has primarily overseen operations as the Print Master and Project Collaborator to Richard Serra since 2000. Throughout his extensive career, Fumat has worked with artists such as Ross Bleckner, Jonathan Borofsky, Vija Celmins, Robert Gober, Ann Hamilton, Michael Heizer, Ellsworth Kelly, Brice Marden, Julie Mehretu, Elizabeth Murray, and Richard Serra. Since 2008, he has taught printmaking at the University of Southern California. He has had works acquired by the National Gallery of Art for their permanent collection. His work has most recently been exhibited at Kylin Gallery in Beverly Hills, The Nook Gallery in Inglewood, S.E.A. gallery, Horse Gallery in Dublin, Ireland, as well as Supercollider Gallery in Los Angeles.
