Biography
Michael Haight
Some of these compositions are like lists of events written over the top of maps, that act as
vessels for emotions not felt until time, and sobriety, allow such feelings, and memories to bubble
to the surface. Some are built as testimonials, like piles of belongings meant to be sifted through,
in order to organize a narrative from the rubble and the aftermath. Many feature one or more acts
of self-portraiture—judgment of the past from the present—as a way to illustrate the way the new
self remembers the old selves. And then there are the figures that surround me with their
influence, and likewise my influence upon them. These gestures encompass the main interests
of my life’s work: enlightenment, spirituality, inner growth, social dynamics, the intentions of self,
and the effects of these causes. Oftentimes an artwork serves as an indication of a choice or
outcome, illustrating cycles of death and rebirth, or hinting at impending transformation. ~Michael
