Biography

Amy Silver (b. 1986, Cleveland, Ohio) A self-described “fervent drawer with lots of feelings and escapist tendencies,” Amy Silver’s work distills complex psychology into moody landscapes with evocative signifiers and mostly female protagonists.
On her recent drawings: “Every now and again we find ourselves on an edge…I have a chronically ill
sibling, who often brings my family to the cusp of life only to walk us back, grateful and tired. I’ve found
the edge to be an unsettling place where you must coexist with two or more realities. My recent drawings attempt to capture this world in-between. A place between adolescence, adulthood and motherhood; life and death; the real and the imagined; the past, present and future. This world is quieter than the one we know—quiet enough that we don’t need language to communicate. Here, it is best to sit patiently and wait. The figures in my drawings are doing just that—reactions must be saved for outcomes.
At the time I made the drawing, I was reading a fascinating book by Stacy Schiff about the Salem witch
trials. Perhaps not surprisingly, much of the behavior that contributed to that dark moment in history is rife today. In this piece I wanted to explore the space between an accusation and its outcome; the quiet
moments when the accused are alone. The title of the piece, ‘I do believe that’s your broom’ helps provide this context along with the small broom soaring through the sky. This world in-between is one I think we can all relate to in varying degrees. Our lives are as subject to interpretation from others as they’ve ever been.”

Silver graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History, 2009, Magna Cum Laude. She has exhibited in various solo and group exhibitions such as Spring Break Art Show, 57W57 ARTS, Picasso Machinery, Alleyoop Project, Artsy HQ.
